일본의 사진작가 가와우치 린코(1972-)는 그녀의 초기작 부터 현재까지 세상 모든 형태의 생명이 지니고 있는 신비, 광채, 연약함 그리고 강인함에 대해 이야기 해왔습니다. 그녀의 이런 주제의식은 동식물이나 가족 등 우리 주변에 있는 연약하고 섬세한 존재와 더불어 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 형성된 화산과 빙하 같은 광활한 대지에도 똑같이 적용됩니다. 빛이 스며든 부드러운 색채로 표현되는 그녀 사진 속의 모든 피사체들은 서로의 연결성을 드러내는 동시에 동일한 생명력으로 반짝입니다.
‘M/E'는 2019년부터 촬영한 가와우치의 새로운 시리즈로, 6년 만에 일본에서열리는 그녀 전시의 주요 주제이자 제목이기도 합니다. M과 E, 이 두 글자는 각각 "어머니"와 "지구"를 의미하며 두 글자가 합쳐져 "어머니 지구"와 "나"를 형성합니다. 언뜻 아이슬란드의 화산과 빙하, 홋카이도의 설경을 담은 이 시리즈의 이미지들은 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인한 일상의 풍경과는 거리가 멀고 무관해 보일 수 있습니다. 그러나 두 곳 모두 현재 우리가 살고 있는 지구에서 일어나고 있는 사건들을 묘사하고 있으며, 가와우치는 이 두 장소가 서로 연결되어 있음을 알려줍니다. 이 작업을 통해 독자는 인간의 삶과 자연과의 관계에 대한 다양한 질문을 다시금 던져보게 됩니다.

“M/E”, the main subject of this exhibition [at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery] and inspiration for its title, is a new series Kawauchi began shooting in 2019. The letters stand for “Mother” and “Earth,” combining to form both “Mother Earth” and “Me.” At a glance, the series’ images of Iceland’s volcanoes and ice floes and Hokkaido’s snowy landscapes may seem distant and unrelated to the everyday scenes from the COVID-19 pandemic that accompany them in the series. However, both types of image depict events now taking place on the planet we live on, and Kawauchi’s artistry alerts us to the connection between them. This exhibition invites the viewer to reconsider a range of questions about the workings of human life and our relationship with nature.
