마하이룬은 18세 이전까지 신장 우루무치에서 태어나 자랐습니다. 18세가 된 후, 그녀는 브루클린에 있는 시각예술학교(School of Visual Arts)에서 패션 사진을 공부하기 위해 뉴욕으로 이주했습니다. 두 지역 사이에는 엄청난 거리가 있음에도 불구하고, 마하이룬은 그들 사이에 흥미로운 문화적 유사점을 발견한다. 브루클린은 전 세계에서 온 사람들을 한데 모아 풍부한 문화의 조화를 만들어내는 반면, 유럽과 아시아를 잇는 통로인 신장 역시 다양하고 공생적인 삶의 방식을 키워내고 있다.
그녀 인생의 두 중요한 시기를 증언하는 이 두 도시는 마하이룬의 깊고 잊을 수 없는 성장의 기억을 상징하며, 이는 그녀의 이후 창작 활동에도 직접적인 영향을 미쳤다. 고향인 신장을 기점으로 삼아, 그녀는 패션 사진을 통해 고향을 기록하며 “우루크린(Uruklyn)”이라는 프로젝트를 탄생시켰다. 이는 “우루무치(Urumqi)”와 “브루클린(Brooklyn)”을 재치 있게 결합한 이름이다.
이 프로젝트를 통해 그녀는 새로운 시각을 제시함으로써, 더 많은 사람들이 현대 신장의 진정성과 다양성을 볼 수 있기를 희망한다. 단순히 엽서 속 풍경뿐만 아니라, 종종 간과되지만 의미 있는 일상의 단편들까지 말이다. 동시에 그녀는 신장 토박이들이 이러한 이미지를 통해 친숙하면서도 비범한 고향을 재발견하기를 바란다.
또한 그녀는 이러한 시각적 자료를 소통의 다리로 삼아, 서로 다른 배경을 가진 사람들이 이곳에서 만나 아이디어를 교환하고, 함께 ‘신장 사람들’의 집단적 기억과 문화적 정체성을 형성해 나가기를 목표로 한다.

Before the age of 18, Ma Hailun was born and raised in Urumqi, Xinjiang. After turning 18, she moved to New York to study fashion photography at the School of Visual Arts in Brooklyn. Despite the vast distance between the two places, Ma finds a fascinating cultural resemblance between them: Brooklyn brings together people from all over the world, creating a rich blend of cultures, while Xinjiang, as a corridor connecting Europe and Asia, also nurtures a diverse and symbiotic way of life.
As witnesses to two important phases of her life, these two cities represent Ma Hailun’s profound and unforgettable memories of growth, which have also directly influenced her later creative work. Using her hometown Xinjiang as an anchor, she documents her homeland through fashion photography, giving rise to the project "Uruklyn"—a clever combination of "Urumqi" and "Brooklyn."
Through this project, she hopes to open a new perspective, allowing more people to see the authenticity and diversity of contemporary Xinjiang—not just the postcard-like landscapes, but also the often overlooked yet meaningful fragments of daily life. At the same time, she hopes that native Xinjiang people can rediscover their familiar yet extraordinary homeland through these images.
She also aims to use these visuals as a bridge for communication: allowing people from different backgrounds to meet and exchange ideas here, collectively shaping the collective memory and cultural identity of the "Xinjiang people."
